Meenakshi Lekhi was born to a Hindu family, Shri Bhagwan Khanna, and Smt. Amarlata Khanna, on April 30, 1967, in New Delhi. Aman Lekhi, her partner, is a renowned Supreme Court solicitor. Pranay Lekhi and Anirudh Nath Lekhi are the couple’s two sons.
She registered with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1990 after receiving her B.Sc. (Hons) from Hindu College and her LL.B. from the Campus Law Center, both at Delhi University.
