Alka Yagnik was born on March 20, 1966, in Kolkata in a Gujarati Hindu Family (which makes the age of Alka Yagnik 56 years as of 2022). Her early exposure to music was facilitated by her mother, Shubha, a singer who specialized as an Indian classical songs singer.
Her mother actively promoted and nourished her daughter’s passion for singing from a young age, which Yagnik attributes to a significant portion of her success (she told Hindu Times that her mother was her first guru.
Yagnik began performing at the age of six, frequently featuring on All India Radio, Calcutta. At age ten, she and her mother moved to Mumbai after getting an invitation letter from Raj Kapoor’s Kolkata agent. After being sufficiently impressed with the child singer’s abilities, Kapoor sent Yagnik to the well-known music director Laxmikant, who spent the next three years honing her skills before releasing her to the public.

Musical Preference
Yagnik declared during the Gaana Music Festival that the 1990s would be her favorite musical era if she were forced to choose. She claimed that romantic, gentle melodies from the 1990s were so pleasant to listen to and that she appreciates gentle romantic melodies. She further said she’s not a fan of extremely heavy or intricate music and enjoys music with meaningful words and a beautiful melody. She said she would always choose simple tunes that touch the heart and make you feel calm and at ease.
Philosophy
While it’s easy to assume that Yagnik likes to churn out hits without regard for their quality (considering that she has sung over 20,000 songs for over a thousand films), that’s not the case. As she revealed to Samvednaayen, she is a fervent believer in the superiority of quality over quantity, which has prompted her to reduce her formerly prodigious output drastically. She remarked that this period of playback singing is exceptionally different from the 1990s, and not every song of this era suits her voice. Moreover, she often declines to sing because she believes that quality is more important than quantity. Nevertheless, if she finds a song that matches her voice, she’ll sing it.
Personal Life
Yagnik wed the billionaire Neeraj Kapoor in 1989. However, their marriage was tumultuous, seeing them separate for about five years. Nevertheless, they managed to bounce back and are currently more robust than ever, despite living further apart.
She told Filmfare that although they’ve endured some harsh consequences of their decisions, they are still together because of their deep connection.

About 42 Indian politicians rejected her song “Cholee Ke Pichhe Kya Hain” due to its offensive language. The song was subsequently prohibited from being broadcast on All India Radio and Doordarshan.
According to claims, several of her songs were recorded at Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad.
