As the year comes to a close, it’s a natural time to reflect on the successes and learnings of the past year, but it’s also time to contemplate the one ahead. At work we may set goals and objectives, while personally we may set New Year resolutions. But how do we as humans cope with uncertainty that the future brings?

Exploring the unknown and seizing opportunities is innately human. For some, investigations need to be at the scale of a subatomic particle. Take Suchitra Sebastian, in our cover story. After working as a management consultant, she ventured into the world of physics with a passion to explore and explain the deep secrets of the universe. “Every day in the lab is an adventure,” she says effortlessly transitioning between quantum phenomena of colliding electrons and performance arts.

For others, surveying the future and calculating its prospects means looking to the stars for clues from the universe. As Chase Maser explains in a new article on SEEMA, just as the physical world interacts invisibly with particles and matter, the metaphysical realm is a complex network of energy around the world that combines human thoughts and wishes and transcends dreams and realities. That’s why we humans love astrology and numerology as ways to predict the future.

As for me, I believe that uncertainty is an integral, exciting part of our daily lives in big and small ways, and not knowing what’s in store makes the future interesting. Uncertainty gives me confidence that I can personally shape my future, regardless of what the stars say or fate puts in my path. We have the power to change the future and create our own destiny, like painting on a blank canvas. Don’t get me wrong. I love reading my horoscope and reading about deep space and black holes. But at the end of the day, I want to decide what I want to do. That’s why setting New Year’s resolutions are meaningful for me - they speak to my resolve to do something better in life.
