  • 1 cup sugar divided
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 large eggs separated
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 45 to 60 vanilla wafers
  • 4 ripe bananas, cut into coins or 1/4-inch slices


  1. In a large saucepan add the flour, half cup sugar, salt, egg yolk and milk. Cook this custard over medium to low flame uncovered while stirring continuously until the mixture is nice and thick.
  2. Remove from heat and add in the butter and vanilla.  Mix till the butter melts and allow to cool.
