With its with smooth texture and vibrant hues, velvet conjures images of all things luxurious and regal.

“Velvet has a subtle sheen and can be effectively used to add an element of elegance and sophistication to any space,” says Neha Jhunjhunwala, founder, Onset Homes. “It has a graceful drape, which makes it ideal for curtains, upholstery and clothing.”

Additionally, this versatile fabric is suitable for a range of décor styles such as traditional, minimalistic, boho chic and even mid-century modern.  It offers a deep, rich look, and its durability makes it both family- and pet-friendly.

Suitable for Summer

While velvet is normally associated with colder seasons, it works well for summer too.  “Look for lightweight velvet in pastel hues,” says Jhunjhunwala.  Choose muted and neutral hues for warmer seasons. Lighter-hued velvet reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it, cooling a room.

Here are five ways to give your home a makeover with velvet.

Accent Furniture

Enhance the look of your living room by incorporating velvet in a statement piece of furniture.  This could be an armchair, ottoman or even a pouf that are a focal point in a room.  Use colors like powder blue, bubble-gum pink or even gray.  Ochre and mustard are also good ideas.  If you want to break the monotony of a muted room, try deep jewel tones like sapphire blue or emerald green.  Velvet goes well with different shapes of furniture. So, if you want to give your living room bench a makeover, velvet is a good choice.

Velvet drapes are ideal if you want to add an elegant and snug touch to your abode. “Choose rich hues or patterned velvet for added visual interest,” says Jhunjhunwala.  If a room is particularly bright and you want to curtail some of that blazing sun coming in, use velvet drapes to cocoon yourself from the outside world.  This works well for a study or home library.

Throw Pillows and Cushions

If you want to infuse a pop of vibrant color, add velvet accents in the form of throw pillows, cushions, or a rug to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space.  Place them on your couch or chairs, and they will add texture and depth while creating a cozy atmosphere.

In the Bedroom

Add a velvet headboard for a touch of luxury and comfort in the bedroom. Neutral tones like gray or beige work well for an understated yet graceful look.  If a headboard is not feasible, consider adding a velvet throw blanket or a footstool for a dash of glam.

Dining Space

Upholster dining chairs in velvet to bring a unique personality to the space. “Opt for complementary colours that accentuate the overall theme or go for bold contrasts,” says Jhunjhunwala.  They are perfect if you entertain often and your guests will love them because they are comfortable.

Tips to Use Velvet in Home Décor

Mixing velvet with other fabrics like silk to add depth and dimension to your space.

For an organic look, pair velvet with natural materials like wood, rattan, or jute.

Velvet pairs well with metallic accents like gold, brass, or copper. Consider using metallic elements in furniture legs, decorative accessories, or lighting fixtures for a sophisticated look.

Velvet can also be used as a wall covering.
