HOT SPOT South Asian Women’s Health & Wellness Through Menopause

The Culture Tree’s inaugural HOT SPOT: South Asian Women’s Health & Wellness Through Menopause event was a groundbreaking gathering that brought together South Asian women in their 40s, 50s, and 60s to address the often-overlooked challenges of menopause and peri-menopause. Held in a warm and welcoming environment, the event provided a safe, supportive, and informed platform for women to share, learn, and connect.

Breaking the Silence on Menopause

Menopause, a natural yet complex phase of life, is often shrouded in silence and stigma, particularly within the South Asian community. The event aimed to change that by fostering open conversations about the physical, emotional, and socio-cultural challenges women face during this transition. Attendees were encouraged to share their experiences, ask questions, and gain insights from leading experts in the field.

Expert-Led Discussions

The first session, held in-person, featured an impressive panel of experts, including:

  • Dr. Kanchan Koya, a renowned scientist and culinary nutrition expert.
  • Dr. Heather Hirsch, a menopause and women’s health specialist.
  • Dr. Poonam Desai, a physician specializing in integrative and lifestyle medicine.
  • Dr. Sonali Lal, a gynecologist and women’s health advocate.

The discussion was skillfully moderated by Dr. Sumeet Bahl, a physician and wellness expert, and Anu Sehgal, founder of The Culture Tree. Together, they delved into the unique health issues faced by South Asian women, including genetic predispositions, cultural taboos, and the lack of awareness around menopause.

The panelists shared practical advice on managing symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and sleep disturbances, while also emphasizing the importance of mental health, nutrition, and lifestyle changes. Attendees left with actionable tips and a renewed sense of empowerment to take control of their health.

A Virtual Follow-Up

The second session, held virtually, continued the conversation with Dr. Amy Shah, a double-board-certified physician and nutrition expert; Dr. Kanchan Koya; and Dr. Somi Javaid, a leading OB-GYN and women’s health advocate. This session allowed women who couldn’t attend in person to participate and benefit from the wealth of knowledge shared by these experts.

Building a Supportive Community

One of the most impactful aspects of the event was the sense of community it fostered. Women who had previously felt isolated in their experiences found solace in connecting with others who shared similar journeys. The post-discussion mingling session provided a relaxed atmosphere for attendees to bond and exchange stories.

A Step Toward a Healthier Future

The HOT SPOT event was more than just a discussion—it was a movement to normalize conversations around menopause and empower South Asian women to prioritize their health and well-being. By addressing the unique challenges faced by this community, The Culture Tree has taken a significant step toward creating a more informed, supportive, and inclusive space for women navigating this phase of life.
