A special event to mark upcoming Indian festivities and honor Indo-U.S. relations

The Indian Embassy in Washington D.C. organized a special event “Colors of Friendship” last weekend, with the aim to jointly celebrate India’s festivals in the coming months and the deepening of India-U.S. relations. The event drew the crème de la crème of the Indian American community, along with Minister of External Affairs of the Government of India, Dr. S. Jaishankar.

Distinguished attendees included Michigan Congressman Sri Thanedar, Director of National Drug Control Policy Dr. Rahul Gupta, National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, and Director of the U.S. Domestic Policy Council Neera Tanden. There were several other prominent Indian American guests who traveled from the capital area as well as from other states.

A Collective Celebration

SEEMA was at India House as part of the select media invited to the event. The event highlighted the shared values and the strong human connections between the two nations. It showcased how the India-US relationship has evolved into one of the most significant and dynamic partnerships on the global stage.

In his welcoming remarks, Indian Ambassador to the U.S. Taranjit Singh Sandhu affectionately referred to Dr. Jaishankar as both his former and current boss, alluding to Dr. Jaishankar’s earlier role as the Deputy Chief of Mission in Washington D.C. According to Ambassador Sandhu, the “Colors of Friendship” festival represented a collective celebration of India’s many festivals between now and December. Other speakers reiterated the growing influence of the Indian American community, not only in business but also increasingly in politics.

2023: A Stellar Year For India

As Dr. Jaishankar took the podium, loud cheers erupted from the crowd. In a cheerful tone, he began by declaring 2023 to be an exceptional year for India. He spoke about recent achievements, including India’s Chandrayaan landing on the dark side of the moon and the successful hosting of the G20 summit.

Dr. Jaishankar has played a pivotal role in shaping the partnership between India and the United States. He acknowledged the difficulty of defining or limiting the expectations of this relationship, emphasizing that it has consistently exceeded expectations over time.

Dr. Jaishankar emphasized the remarkable journey that India and the United States have undertaken together, with their relationship continually evolving and surpassing previous standards. He stressed that trust is the cornerstone of their partnership, a term that has gained prominence in international relations.

The Future Of India-U.S. Relations

Dr. Jaishankar concluded by invoking the spirit of Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing the importance of doing the right thing and leaving no one behind. In a world facing complex challenges, the India-U.S. relationship stands as a beacon of trust, collaboration, and shared values. Dr. Jaishankar’s address served as a testament to the enduring strength of this partnership, leaving the thousand-plus attendees inspired and hopeful for the future.
