In spite of growing up in a society that did not value accomplishment by women, Deepika Kumari has transcended her origins by becoming a champion in archery. By the age of 18, she had the ranking of No. 1 in the world and went on to compete in the Olympics.
Deepika Kumari Biography
Deepa Kumari, the athlete, known for her skill in archery, was born in outskirts of Ranchi, Jharkhand, India in 1994. Her parents that did not have much money: Deepa’s father was a rickshaw driver and her mother was a nurse.
In rural India, they teach young girls that they are burdens and supress them from the first day of their lives. This was a belief that she would rise above.
Repeatedly hungry, she often ate mangoes, which she wrestled down from the trees by throwing stones. Her cousin recommended the Archery Training Center, a school where she would get food and shelter. Her thinking was that she would no longer be a burden and would have a full stomach, at least.
Finally convincing her mother of the value of education, she left home for this boarding school. However, her beginning talent there was not good, but she begged the school for a 3-month trial. Fortunately, she began to gain skill and rose highly in her class. After winning local competitions, Tata Archery Academy scouted her. She soon was a winner of the Cadet World Championship.
However, the people of her rural village thought it was shameful for her to wear shorts on television, and that she should be staying at home.

Surprising her parents with her achievements how far she has come, she has earned medals at World Championships, World Cups, Asian Championships, the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
At the 2012 Olympics in London, she suffered a fever and could not first compete. Although she made a start that was promising, she finished tied for 33rd in the recursive competition. However, she went on to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics and then the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
