You may have seen these round puff-like deep-fried sweets that resemble donuts. Gulgule was originally derived from North India, and contains ingredients such as jaggery, refined sugar, fennel seeds, and flour. This dish is normally served at nuptial celebrations or traditional food festivals like karwachauth basauda. Some prefer to call gulegule pua, or simply dumplings. Others refer to gulgule as tasty, sweet fritters. Gulgule is one of the simplest dishes to make, so if you’ve been wanting to try this, here’s a simple recipe or two to do so. Remember that your cooking time for gulgule may take only 12 minutes. It also takes approximately 5 minutes to prepare this. 

Steps on How to Make Gulgule 

Please note the following tips, before making gulgule.

  • Don’t forget to choose high instead of medium heat if you want your gulgule to be soft.
  • Ghee is usually used to make gulgule, although it’s not the only ingredient you can fry your gulgule. If you prefer to steer clear of frying in something sweet, you may deep dry you gulgule in cooking oil. 

You’ll need the following ingredients to make gulgule. 

  • Ghee as a means to deep fry your gulgule.
  • 1 cup of wheat flour 
  • 2 tablespoons of yoghurt 
  • A cup of water 
  • A handful of cardamoms 
  • ½ cup of sugar 
  •  Some fennel 

How to Prepare your Gulgule 

  1. You’ll need to make your cardamom fine.
  2. Get out your mixing bowl.
  3. Add your ground cardamoms to your fennel, flour, yoghurt, and sugar.
  4. Don’t forget to meld your mixture thoroughly.
  5. Create your batter by adding some water, although you shouldn’t add this all at once. 
  6. Blend the mixture thoroughly.
  7. Be careful not the make the consistency of the mixture too think.
  8. The consistency shouldn’t be too thick too, as your mixture won’t be able to pour easily if it’s too thick. 
  9. Place your stove on a low to medium type of heat setting.
  10. Get out your wok and place a few of these sweet dumplings in your ghee which you’ll be using as a cooking oil in this instance. 
  11. Deep fry your gulgule until it’s a light brown hue. 
  12. Remove the gulgule from the wok and place it on grease proof paper to drain any excess oil.

How to Make Gulgule with Banana

Gather the following ingredients for this gulgule recipe. 

  • Some baking soda 
  • ¾ cups of mashed bananas 
  • Vegetable oil for frying (Note that if you’re already using other sweet ingredients, including bananas, you won’t need to fry your gulgule in something as sweet as ghee.
  • Some baking soda 
  • A cup of wheat flour 
  • ½ teaspoon of cardamom 
  • 8 teaspoons of icing sugar

Preparing your Banana Gulgule 

Follow these steps with preparing your gulgule. 

  1. Get a mixing bowl and a stainless steel whisk to beat your batter.
  2. Add all of your ingredients to the bowl.
  3. Start adding your water bit by bit, all the while stirring the mixture and creating the right consistency.
  4. Turn on the heat on your stove.
  5. Get out your frying pan, or any pan that is deep enough.
  6. Heat the oil to a medium heat setting.
  7. Create little dumpling-like balls of batter and place each in your hot oil. 
  8. Remember that in order to be classified as done, the gulgule needs to be golden brown on its flip sides too.
  9. Remove the gulgule from the oil.
  10. Gather some parchment paper and place your gulgule on there so all the oil can drain.
