Born in Mumbai, she studied at the Bombay Scottish School in Mahim and went to Mithbai College where she completed her degree of Bachelors of Commerce. Etka Kapoor began her career at 17 years of age. Her father helped her to start the television serial production company, Balaji Telefilms, where she first made three episodes and six pilots without success. Her success came, however, with the popular serial Hum Paanch.
A number of soap operas, TV series and movies have her as the producer. “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” aired in 2000 of STAR Plus. With Bollywood calling in 2001, she produced Kyo Kii…Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta and Kucch Tou Hai in 2003. Krishna Cottage, based on a supernatural theme, had production in 2004. Kya Kool Hai Hum (How Cool Are We), which starred her brother Tushaar Kapoor, became one of the biggest hits of 2005.
