With warmer weather and longer days, it’s time to read al fresco, whether in your backyard or the beach. Kick off your summer reading with our top picks.

The Making of Her: A Novel”by Bernadette Jiwa

A note from Emma, the child that Joan Egan gave up for adoption 30 years earlier, arrives at her Dublin home under unexplained circumstances.

Afternoon” by Nidhi Dalmia

The story of “Afternoon” takes place in the late 1960s in the cities of San Francisco, New York, Kashmir, and Delhi. It centers on a college student and two women whose lives he touched at separate times.

One of these is a Kashmiri Muslim woman who spent her childhood in Delhi and with strong ties to her native country. The other character is a New Yorker working for the American Field Service after a brief stint in India. The multifaceted nature of intercontinental connections is only one of many factors that deter these blossoming relationships. The tale addresses the impact of love, consequences of personal decisions, and the influence of circumstances beyond our reach.

Miss Adventures of a Salesgirl” by Aashisha Chakraborty
