rich and diverse genre that has been a popular part of films since the inception of cinema.

The Hangover (2009)

This may be the most familiar film on the list and you would have to be living under a rock to have missed watching it when it released or ever since. The film released by Warner Bros in 2009 was an instant hit that no one had anticipated. Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover follows four friends that travel to Las Vegas to celebrate one of their upcoming marriages. Things end up getting pretty wild and out of hand. On the morning after the bachelor party, the four friends have no recollection of the night before and have peace everything together with the realization that things may have gone a tad overboard the previous night. The raunchy laughs are plentiful in the film and the unpredictability of the storyline makes the film extremely funny and an absolute must watch! The film stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianikas. The success of the film resulted in a few sequels being made which did not really see the same success and made the original as one of the most hilarious and wild comedies ever made. The Hangover is a classic that you’re likely to watch over and over again, and forcefully establishes – What happens in Vegas, it very very funny!.

Coming To America (1988)

The funny man of the 80s – Eddie Murphy teams up with Arsenio Hall to give this comedy masterpiece. In this hilarious film, Eddie Murphy plays the prince of a wealthy African Country, Akeem, who is determined to find the love of his life on his own rather than have it arranged by his family. Full of hope, Akeem comes to America to find his soulmate. Between the culture shock and the hardship of finding love, Akeem takes on a wacky, hilarious adventure that proves that love and understanding know no borders. The film is good comedy with romance and has cameos from future current celebrities like Samuel L. Jackson which are fun to watch. Eddie Murphy shows his softer side in the film as compared to the Beverly Hill Cop character with some superb comic timing, a satirical edge, and an extraordinary gift for mimicry. The film had a sequel in 2021 which filled you with nostalgia but was a watered down version of the original. The 1988 film directed by John Landis is certainly one of the good comedy movies which you should watch.

Borat (2006)

The film follows ‘Borat’, played by Sacha Baron Cohen who’s a fictitious Kazakh journalist, who is travelling through the United States documenting real-life situations with normal American people. This daring and somewhat controversial film was released in 2006 and is an absolute laugh riot. Sasha Baron Cohen arrives in America to learn what precisely makes America great. Offending every person he meets and turning pranks and political incorrectness into an art. Borat is by far one of the funniest characters to appear on screen and Sasha Baron Cohen proved to the world that he is one of the most gifted comedy actors. The film is obscene at times, rude, vulgar, and politically incorrect at time but is also very funny.  The film is more than a comedy and also reflective of the racism that simmers in America. It most definitely was one of the best comedies of that year and is certainly one the best comedies of all times.

Bridesmaids (2011)

The argument about whether women are funny, usually had amongst men was emphatically put to rest single handedly by Melissa McCarthy in the Bridesmaids. Before making a name for herself through this 2011 film, McCarthy had been mostly on television shows like the Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who? She gained critical acclaim for her performance in this comedy film, receiving a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Directed by Paul Feig, Bridesmaids centers around the competition between the maid of honor and a bridesmaid, over who is the bride’s best friend. The film catapulted Melissa to bigger and even lead roles through this film where she plays a foul-mouthed and violent friend. The film will surely get you into hysterics. It isn’t exactly a black comedy or a dark comedy, but explores the way that friends can sometimes become jealous and sabotage each other. The film is the female version of The Hangover, a bit smarter and sweeter stumble to the altar.
The film is a terrific comedy and fearless in just about every way you’d want a comedy to be and one of the best new comedy movies.

Deadpool (2016)

No one can deny their love for superhero movies, but then there seems to be an over kill with them showering onto the screens. How about a superhero movie that would make you laugh like hell? Deadpool is the film that fits the bill perfectly. Ryan Reynolds gloriously brings to life its title character, Captain Deadpool and unapologetically, mocks the superhero genre by making fun of itself, the studio, and just about everything else along the way. In a world currently suffering from the dual pandemic of Covid and superhero fatigue, Deadpool is the film that could lift you up with its irreverent and foul-mouthed character. The movie is bloody and violent in all the right places and outrageously funny. Ryan Reynolds, clearly relishes the part with the director Tim Miller keeping us entertained and amused throughout the film. Deadpool is a fun movie that will get even better each time it is viewed and is definitely one of the best new comedy movies.

Meet The Parents (2000)

The film is irresistible. If you suffer from the somewhat natural feeling that your in-laws don’t like you, this movie will assure you that they don’t and even worse. This list of the best comedy movies of all time will not be complete without this hilarious movie which stars two of the most unlikely pairing – Ben Stiller and Robert DeNiro. It is perhaps DeNiro’s most iconic performance proving that he can understand and manage comic roles as well. The film revolves around a male nurse – Greg Focker who meets his girlfriend’s parents before proposing, but her suspicious father is every date’s worst nightmare. The dad, a former CIA profiler who’s as tough as nails and twice as sharp puts the greatest pressure on the male nurse meeting his girl’s parents. The film directed by Ja Roach, adopts all sorts of humor that will appeal to any audience. The chemistry between De Niro and Stiller generate most of the film’s laughs, in their  give-and-take repartee. Meet the Parents is a hilarious movie and has De Niro giving his best comic performance ever with Ben Stiller stamping his mark as one of the most adept comic performers of our time.

My Cousin Vinny (1992)

Joe Pesci is an absolute pleasure in all the movies he has been part of from the GoodFellas to Home Alone. The film is a stretched-out courtroom drama scripted by Dale Launer about two New Yorkers accused of murder in rural Alabama while on their way back to college and call in the help of one of their cousins, a loudmouth lawyer with no trial experience. As soon as Pesci appears he takes care of comedy in this endearing classic comedy. Marisa Tomei won an Oscar for her performance in this movie. Marisa Tomei steals the film with her performance as an unemployed hairdresser who also is a specialist in auto mechanics. My Cousin Vinny is a crowd-pleasing comedy with excellent performances from Pesci and Tomei in a rare comedy that is wonderfully imagined and beautifully played.

American Pie (1999)

This 1999 classic provides a ton of laughs. If you went to high school, you would definitely relate to most if not all the which is almost guaranteed, then you’ll certainly be able to relate to some of the mischief and the pranks that the bunch of friends are up to in this film. The film was written by Adam Herz, directed by Paul and Chris Weitz and was a massive box-office success at the time. The film centers around five best friends who make a pact to lose their virginity before they graduate high school. This movie is the perfect teen comedy and is almost like a bright shining object designed to draw teenagers like moths to a flame. The movie pushed every possible boundary of taste and humor. For a rookie bunch of writers and director, they sure packed in two hours of mad cap fun and hilarity in this film. The film made stars out of the fresh cast which included Jason Biggs, Chris Klien. Tara Reid and Alyson Hannigan. The jokes in the film are humorous and the film an overall a great watch over and over. A wonderful and hilarious comedy with laughter at every turn makes this film one of the best comedy movies of all time.

The Gold Rush (1925)

Slapstick comedy has been an integral part of the genre since the very beginning. Slapstick traces its roots back to vaudeville and the stage, where actors performed exaggerated physical stunts and gags. Not surprisingly, this comedic style worked very well during the early days of silent cinema. It helped launch the careers of some of the biggest names in comedy like Charlie Chaplin. In this classic silent comedy, the Little Tramp finds himself braving the Alaskan gold rush. Trapped in a small cabin by a blizzard, the Tramp is forced to share close quarters with a successful prospector and a fugitive. Watch him fend off starvation by chomping down his boots – has gone down in screen history. Eventually he is able to leave the cabin and falls for a lovely barmaid, trying valiantly to win her affections. The film is one of the best Charlie Chaplin movies, with some of the purest comedy-fantasies and some brilliant set-pieces including Charlie changing into a chicken and the ‘dance of the dinner rolls. It is not difficult to understand as to why The Gold Rush has consistently entertained generations of audiences, but do try to see the silent original version.

The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard (2021)

Director Patrick Hughes brings together Ryan Reynolds and Sameul L. Jackson and makes the combination potent by adding in Salma Hayek in this amusingly scripted fun movie. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard is a 2021 American action comedy film and is the sequel to the 2017 film – The Hitman’s Bodyguard. After the events of the original film, bodyguard Michael Bryce continues his friendship with the hitman Darius Kincaid as they embark on a new adventure to save Sonia, Darius’s wife, from new threats. The film is funny, entertaining and Reynolds and Jackson at their best. If you are in search for an insanely fun over the top movie to watch this is the film for you. The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard manages to overcome its action clichés with its hilarious moments. The cast is the real standout in this comedic action movie that is not meant to be taken seriously.

To help you in your search for some fun and humor, we have put together this list of the best comedy movies of all time. All of us need a laugh and I hope that the movies on this list can give you that much needed relief from the mundane and lift your spirits like they usually do.
