Hate them, love them, respect them, or detest them: guns are a modern-day reality— and not just for us, but also for a rare-book dealer named Deen, the lead character in Amitav Ghosh’s page-turner, Gun Island, set in New York City. Deen’s journey is tightly wrapped up in the hands of New York’s Bengali community, but also framed by climate change and impending environmental disaster. This is a multigenerational story that touches on the world’s crises in a poised, oblique way that nevertheless ties things together without sounding preachy or moralistic.
