Hima Das: The Pride of India

Hima Das, a 19-year-old Indian athlete, made history after winning five gold medals in the European Athletics Championships in July 2019. She is the toast of the nation and has set many goals for herself to become one of India’s best sportspersons.

Hima Das is the youngest of 5 siblings. She hails from a humble rice farming family near Dhing in the Indian state of Assam. Her parents Ronjit and Jonali Das. Hima Das has gone on to win many medals in her sport and bring home gold for India in track. Her achievements have also brought her a lot of media attention and fame.

Humble Beginnings

Hima Das was a child prodigy from the beginning. She began playing football with local boys in mud pits beside her parents’ rice fields and was convinced to take up professional athletics when she was very young. Das would say in an interview that she preferred to play football and had hoped to play it for the Olympics. Her interests took a dramatic turn.

Sprinting Career

The Indian athlete’s five successive gold medals in Europe was a feat that was almost out of this world. She had won all her medals in a span of just 19 days and was able to achieve this feat with ease.

Hima Das had won all her medals, beating her rivals by a fair margin and excelling at the top of the podium. She not only beat them but also became a symbol of pride among Indian athletic supporters.

World champion sprinter Hima Das scored massive success in her first competitive 200 m race of the year, while national record-holder shot putter Tajinder Pal Singh Toor clinched the bronze medal at the Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland. Hima won the gold medal with 23.65 seconds. She has a personal best time of 23.10 seconds. 

With the most recent performance, Hima Das is locked in a race for gold with her Russian opponent, who is ranked higher than her. The Indian athlete has the opportunity to win her first gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. On July 7, 2017, Hima Das overcame a slow start to win her 2nd gold in the 200m at the Kutno Athletics Meet. She won with a time of 23.97 seconds, beating her 1st-place opponent, VK Vismaya.

India’s Hima Das’ third medal came when she ran a new Olympic Record for the 200m at the Kladno Memorial Athletics Meet in the Czech Republic. The result was another gold for India, which continued to dominate sprinting events after their recent victories in Europe.

It was a golden day for Das when she ran faster than any other athlete in the same race at the Czech Republic athletics meet. She finished with her 4th gold medal in the 200m race at Tabor Athletics Meet. The Czech Republic in 23.25 seconds.

Lastly, Hima Das won the gold in the 400m race at the Mezinarodni Atleticky Mitink in Nove Mesto, Prague, on July 20. With her time of 52.09 seconds, she took home the top honors for the race, making it her 5th gold medal win for the month.


She won her 6th consecutive gold at the Athleticky Mitink Reiter 2019 in the Czech Republic a month later. This came after winning gold in the 400m earlier this year. Hima has achieved so much success so quickly that she has become one of the most celebrated athletes in India.

Hima Das is the fastest 400m runner in the whole of India. Her run time of 47.65 seconds at the 2018 Asian Games has made her a household name in India, and she has been awarded many accolades since then. From humble beginnings playing football in a muddy rice field, she went on to become a national hero on the global stage.
