She has earned fame and popularity through a wide range of roles in films and television. She entered films with ABCD (1999) which she followed with American Chai (2001). Both the films garnered acclaim.

Shel began her journey in the entertainment industry when there were very few South Asian actors in the west. She unearthed her passion for acting during her high school days and later enrolled in the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University from where she graduated with honors. Sheetal won the role after an extensive scouting to portray the role of Maya, which Sheetal did in the film. With her performance in the film Sheetal Sheth won many hearts.

Sheetal has won the Best Actress award for Wings of Hope (2001) at the Cinevue Film Festival, and following that she won many other awards for her nuanced and often provocative portrayals. For The World Unseen she won five awards across the world, which includes Best Actress award at Gran Canaria Film Festival in Spain, in 2009 and Best Actress award at Festival del Mar in Ibiza, in 2009. She was voted as ‘Favorite Movie Actress’ in AfterEllen’s Visibility Awards in 2012.

As an author, her children’s book, Always Anjali garnered wide acclaim and went on to win the 2019 Purple Dragonfly Storybook Grand Prize (voted by teachers and librarians). She was also written op-eds on CNN and Thrive Global.

Sheetal was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2018, but has survived it till now. Showing remarkable grit and spirit, she went public about her diagnosis and even appeared bald on a magazine cover to show different versions of beauty.
