The freshness in the air was unmissable as we approached H D Kote road from Mysore towards The Serai, Kabini which is a premium resort perched on the banks of the river Kabini. Looking for a break from the urban humdrum, we had booked ourselves for a two-day rejuvenating stay and as we approached the place, we were greeted by lush greenery and some spectacular views of the Western Ghats and the Nilgiris Hills.
Popular Wildlife Destination
For the uninitiated Kabini is a premier wildlife destination located in the southeastern part of the Nagarhole National Park which is in Mysuru district of Karnataka. Kabini is also the name of a major river that flows through the state before joining river Kaveri in T Narasipur. The backwaters of the Kabini river which is also called Kapila forms for a stunning destination and offers a kaleidoscope of sights for visitors. From coracle rides to land safaris and leisurely walks by the placid river bank to a unique boat safari there is indeed plenty that you can do while here. “Destinations like Kabini offer a meaningful escape from the pace and pressures of urban life. Across seasons, the landscape lends itself to a diverse range of experiences, from immersive outdoor adventures and wildlife encounters to serene quieter moments on the river bank. A safari is not simply about witnessing wildlife in its natural habitat; it is an opportunity to disconnect from the everyday, slow down and reconnect with nature in a way that is both enriching and restorative” says Saibal Sen, Chief operating officer, The Serai Resorts. So, whether you want to unwind on the hammock amidst the pristine surroundings or play an indoor board game of chess, Kabini is a great way to revitalize your mind, body and soul.

Monsoon Diaries
While several national parks are closed during the monsoon season, a visit to Kabini gives you a chance to go on a safari inside the renowned Nagarhole Tiger Reserve. You can opt for a jeep or canter and the guides will take you on designated routes during which you can experience the fascinating beauty of the forest. The biodiversity of the park is indeed a revelation and the woods boast of a wide variety of flora and fauna. The former includes species like the teak tree, the elusive rosewood trees and also a tree whose bark resembles the skin of a crocodile. Avian species include raptors like the serpent eagle, forest babblers which are also known as seven sisters, parakeets and wood pecker species. Animal species include deer, sambhar, elephants, leopard and even the tiger. We spotted wild dogs which are predators and the way they chased deer was indeed a sight to behold.

River Love
One of the best aspects of this destination is its lifeline, the Kabini River. The river which is a tributary of the Cauvery flows through the national park which makes a boat safari possible here. This is a unique safari that happens every morning and afternoon and helps visitors experience the magic of the forest on water. These guided safaris take you through the river where you can spot many species like smooth coated otters in the water and jackals, wild boar and elephants on the shore. The summer season sees a large congregation of elephants on the banks and if you are lucky, you can see hundreds of them together. The waters are also home to a variety of avian species and spotting cormorants nesting is a common sight. This apart, the river is home to mugger crocodiles and birds like painted storks, darter birds, egrets, kingfishers, and more. In all visiting Kabini is not just about wildlife but how nature is always the best idea for a break from urban stress.
