Legendary Indian Designer Ritu Beri continues to redefine fashion

4 years ago / by Nell Dufree

Layers of stripes. Electric colors. Intricate embroidery and buttons. Ritu Beri’s gorgeous designs take details from traditional Indian styles and translate them into the modern day, appealing to international celebrities. Her designs have been worn by professionals like Nicole Kidman, Andie McDowell, and Preity Zinta.

Beri grew up in India and attended the National Institute of Fashion Technology in New Delhi. She began showing her work in Europe (one of the first Indian designers to do so) and worked with “French embroidery maestro” (as Telegraph Indiaput it), Francois Lesage, perfecting her craft. Her unique and stunning designs led to her being tapped to lead the French fashion house Jean-Louis Scherrer — the first Asian woman to ever lead a French fashion house.

She is prolific, creating new and incredible designs every season for most of the past 25 years. In 2010, she was knighted by the French government, and in 2014 she received an order of civil merit from the Spanish government as well.
