How to take care of your lips this winter

The winter months bring cold temperatures and dry air. As the air gets drier, our skin does, too. And our lips are no exception. Lips do not produce natural oils, as does most of our skin. So it easily becomes dry, flaky, and chaps in the winter. Luckily, there are steps you can take and products available to help keep your lips protected and well-moisturized in cold weather.

Winter Lip-Care Tips

Stay hydrated

Drinking plenty of water will help keep your lips and skin hydrated. The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends about 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men and about 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women.

Avoid picking and licking lips

Flaky lips are annoying, but picking or licking them makes things worse.

Purchase a humidifier

A humidifier is an easy way to add moisture to your home, which can help combat the dryness that comes from the warm air in our home heating systems.

Apply lip balm

Putting the right lip balm throughout the day can hydrate lips and lock in moisture. This helps protect lips and reduce irritation.
