Winter is when low temperatures and low humidity levels makes the skin flaky, itchy and dry.

Chapped lips, redness, and rash are common. It is extremely important during this season to protect your skin from the harsh weather.

“Just like you wear woolen clothes to cover your body and protect it from the cold, layer your skin with a good moisturizer and the right products to keep it healthy and hydrated,” says Rajesh Grover, founder of Derma Essentia.

Hydration is Key

Indoor heat and strong winds draw the moisture away from your skin, leaving it sans nourishment. Hence, it is imperative to use a good moisturizer, especially one rich in emollients and lipids. Ceramides, mineral oil and glycerine also help to seal the moisture in, keeping the skin smooth and soft.  It also acts as a barrier against any environmental damage. Glycerine reduces skin problems like infection, pimples, acne, and blackheads as well. It is also a great choice for curing cracked heels.

“You can apply a Vitamin C-rich serum as it can help in increasing the production of collagen, which helps to keep your skin supple and rejuvenated.  A moisturizer which contains Hyaluronic acid is also effective to reduce any kind of dryness,” says Grover. Make sure to protect your skin against the winter sun, which can be quite intense. Use a good sunscreen to protect your skin against the sun, especially if you are out for a long time.

Nature’s Healing Power

When it comes to skin care especially during the winter there are a number of natural ingredients that work wonders on your skin.  So, here is a list that serves as a ready reckoner when it comes to your winter skin care regime:

Argan oil: Argan oil is obtained from the kernels of the argan tree, which is native to Morocco. It is loaded with high levels of vitamins and minerals. Argan oil not only reduces dryness, but it is rich in antioxidants, which also helps protect the skin. It is a solution for chronic dry skin and even conditions like eczema. It also helps tightens the pores, making the skin soft and radiant.

Shea butter: Shea butter is one of the most effective ingredients for soothing dry skin and healing chapped lips. It is rich in fatty acids and vitamins apart from being rich in anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a highly therapeutic ingredient.

Cream and milk: cream which is high in saturated fat helps in moisturizing the skin cells giving it a radiant glow. Mixing cream with milk, which is rich in lactic acid, can gently help in exfoliating the skin. This mixture also helps reduce dark spots, too.

Curd, or yogurt: Curd is replete with lactic acid, which helps tighten the skin.  It also has high levels of vitamin D apart from being a very good natural moisturizer. Using products containing yogurt helps soothe irritated skin and also reduces rash and dryness.

Bananas: Did you know that apart from eating banana, applying mashed bananas could give you great skin? The fruit has a lot of Vitamin A, which helps hydrate the skin, keeping it smooth and glowing.  It also increases collagen production. There are a wide range of products available in the market loaded with the goodness of bananas.

Check the ingredients in your skin care products. Avoid them if they have alcohol or sulfates, since these can dry your skin. Look for ingredients like glycerine or hyaluronic acid, which can help nourish and soften your skin. Choose a good moisturizer if you have dry skin. If it is oily, use gel-based products. If you have normal skin, go for moisturizing oils. Drink 6 to 7 glasses of water a day to keep your skin naturally hydrated.
