Mahua Moitra is among the well-known Indian politicians and the Krishnagar Constituency, West Bengal Member of Parliament. Below is a detailed biography of Mahua Moitra with all the information you need to know about her.

Early Life

Mahua Moitra was born in Kolkata, West Bengel, on 5th May 1974 to Majoo Moitra and Dwipendra Lal Moitra. She attended local Kolkata schools for her primary and secondary education. After graduating high school, she got accepted into Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, where she majored in Economics and mathematics.

She graduated in 1998 as the topper in her class and got a job at JPMorgan Chase, New York. She started as an investment banker but later got promoted to the organization’s vice president in London.

During her class’s ten-year college reunion, she noticed that, just like her, her batchmates had successful careers in the banking field. She decided that she was not going to attend another reunion as another managing director at a bank and quit her job to peruse politics.

Career

Mahua Moitra joined the Indian National Congress youth wing, Indian Youth Congress, in 2008 as a member. She then started working on the ‘Aam Admi Ka Sipahi’ project as one of Rahul Gandhi’s trusted people, producing impeccable results.

She worked hard at the party, got involved in other projects, and eventually became a familiar and loved face by people in West Bengal.

In 2010, Mahua Moitra left the party, saying that the members used to compromise on things she did not agree to. In the same year, she joined the All India Trinamool Congress and rose through the ranks in the party because of her massive following in West Bengel.

In 2016, the party announced her as their candidate from the West Bengel Karimpur constituency. She ended up winning the assembly elections that year and was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. She also served as the general secretary and spokesperson of the party for a short period.

In 2019, the party announced Mahua Moitra again as their candidate for that year’s general elections from Krishnagar Constituency in West Bengel. She campaigned heavily for the elections and visited all Krishnagar districts.

She also appointed several grassroot workers from her party who helped her connect with locals of all ages. She visited places no other leader had visited before and talked to people about the issues affecting them.

This gave Mahua Moitra a significant competitive advantage, and she was elected to the 17th Lok Sabha as the Krishnagar Member of Parliament on 24th May 2019. Her first speech in parliament included addressing the increase of fascism in India, and many people considered it the speech of the year.

On 13th November 2021, TMC appointed politician Mahua Moitra as the party’s Goa in charge of preparing the party for the 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election.

Controversies

On 10th January 2017, Mahua Moitra made a police complaint against Union Minister Babul Supiryo and Bharatiya Janata Pary MP for insulting her modesty on television during a national debate. The Calcutta High Court later dismissed the complaint.

Babul Pupriyo followed that by sending Tapas Paul and Saugata Roy legal notices for allegedly defaming him after they accused him of involvement in the scam associated with the Rose Valley firm.

On 3rd August 2018, Moitra reportedly slapped a female police officer at Assam airport, resulting in her detention at the airport. She was not allowed on her flight to Kolkata that night but left with a case registered against her the following day.

In January 2020, Morita was faced with a defamatory lawsuit from Zee Media for her alleged derogatory statements against them while addressing reporters. She was later granted bail and tried by the Delhi Court.

On 5th July 2022, while at the India Today Conclave East, Mahua Moitra described goddess Kali as a meat-eating and alcohol-accepting goddess because the goddess had a cigarette on her. The TMC party distanced themselves from the controversy and said that Moitra made those claims on a personal level.

She also received hate from netizens on August 2022 after a viral video showed her hiding her expensive Louis Vuitton bag. This was after Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar from TMC raised an issue about price rises in the Lok Sabha. She, however, dismissed the video with a series of photos on Twitter.
