What inspired you to start Samaa Events by Samia, LLC, and what has been your journey in establishing it as a leader in luxury South Asian event planning?

As the daughter of a single immigrant mother, my journey began at the young age of eighteen, driven by an ambitious vision to redefine success in the events industry while aspiring to pursue multiple business ventures. I worked tirelessly to expand my events firm nationally and internationally—all while funding my university education through my firm, the initial reason to start my firm, without taking a single loan, demonstrating my unwavering commitment to financial independence and self-reliance. I’m an outspoken advocate for financial stability and the belief that women can truly have it all.

How does your firm balance honoring traditional South Asian wedding rituals with modern luxury and innovation?

At Samaa Events, we specialize in offering a truly elevated, luxury experience by combining expert event planning with sophisticated, bespoke design. As a full-service firm, we don’t just coordinate; we craft immersive, beautifully designed events that reflect your unique vision, ensuring every detail is flawlessly executed. Now, there is a large difference between being a wedding planner and being a designer, but Samaa Events offers design within planning, which means from conceptualization to completion, we create extraordinary moments that leave a lasting impression.

For Hindu weddings, the mandap traditionally consists of a four-legged structure, an essential element symbolizing the sacred space for the couple’s union. However, with modern innovation, these mandaps are evolving, incorporating asymmetrical designs and even acrylic elements, offering a unique and contemporary twist to this timeless tradition.

Similarly, in Muslim weddings, the once-segmented structure of three or four separate events has begun to merge. This contemporary shift not only streamlines the celebrations but also makes the occasion more cost-effective, reduces travel burdens for guests, and simplifies the planning for families. Oftentimes these events are called “Shendhi” or “Shalima.”

People describe your concerts, which feature artists like Zack Knight, PropheC, and Ezu, as cultural experiences. How do you ensure they resonate with audiences while preserving South Asian heritage?

My current focus is on urban desi artists because they authentically represent the modern South Asian first-generation diaspora. Unlike our parents, who were raised in South Asia, these artists were born and brought up abroad, just like many of us. Their music bridges this dual identity, drawing from South Asian roots while reflecting the experiences of growing up outside the subcontinent, whether it’s the USA, Canada, or the UK.

You’ll often hear a unique blend in their lyrics—English words seamlessly intertwined with desi ones, creating a fusion that feels fresh and deeply relatable. This is worlds apart from the classic Bollywood music our parents grew up with, offering us representation that truly resonates with our lived experiences and cultural identity. It helps us stay connected to our roots, as there’s a song for all of us.

What has been the most memorable event or wedding you’ve planned, and what made it stand out?

One of my most memorable milestones was working with Tamanna Roashan, a renowned celebrity makeup artist, on several high-profile events. My journey with her began in April in Houston, and she later invited me to be a part of her 10-Year Masterclass Finale in Los Angeles—an unforgettable experience. During the event, she invited me on stage and gave me a heartfelt shout-out in front of 400 students.

The recognition was beyond meaningful and truly humbling. What made this even more special was that Tamanna could have chosen any event planner, especially in a luxury destination like Los Angeles. Yet, she specifically entrusted me to bring her vision to life. To top it all off, she accompanied a handwritten note that left me speechless. In it, she expressed that she had always believed in my potential and knew from the moment we met that I was destined for greatness. Her kind words and thoughtfulness were a gesture that I will always cherish. To think that a celebrity like her would take the time to do this for me is still surreal—it was truly a full-circle moment.

Being recognized as one of the “Top 10 Most Successful South Asian Women in the USA” by Shilpa Shetty is a significant achievement. How has this recognition influenced your work and vision?

Being recognized as one of the “Top 10 Most Successful South Asian Women in the USA” by Shilpa Shetty is a truly humbling and significant milestone in my journey. As someone who has spent over a decade working with Fortune 500 companies and alongside A-list celebrities, I’ve always strived to create experiences that go beyond expectations—ones that leave a lasting impression. The recognition from Shilpa Shetty, a trailblazer in her own right, reinforces the importance of leadership, innovation, and staying true to one’s cultural roots while embracing global opportunities. It has given me an even greater sense of purpose.

Everyone often says that we can’t have it all, but I truly believe that we can. Winning this award was a reaffirmation of that belief for me—it showed me that I’ve been able to thrive in every area of my life. For me, balance has always been key. I firmly believe that you can be career-driven and still be an amazing daughter, sister, wife, and mother. You can be deeply connected to your faith and still enjoy a vibrant, modern social life. You can be dedicated to fitness and still master a traditional Bollywood dance routine. We shouldn’t have to choose one aspect of ourselves over another. I truly believe that I’m living proof of this—showing that it’s possible to excel in multiple roles and more, despite the world often telling us we can only have one.

This award marked a defining moment in my life, not just because I was the youngest recipient but because it was a moment of deep self-recognition. As women, we often don’t pause to acknowledge our own achievements, but this was different. It wasn’t just a recognition; it was proof that my success wasn’t handed to me. I created these opportunities and reached these milestones through hard work, determination, and overcoming adversity, all at such a young age.

When they played the AV video that highlighted every chapter of my journey, I was reminded of how far I’ve come. Hearing my story reflected back to me reaffirmed my belief that anything is possible. I’ve always had big dreams, but winning this award made those dreams feel even bolder, even scarier. And that’s exactly how it should be. After all, they say if your dreams don’t scare you, you’re not dreaming big enough. And that’s exactly what I’m doing now—dreaming bigger, aiming higher, and pushing forward with even more passion and purpose.

Also, a fun fact is that growing up, everyone thought I looked like Shilpa Shetty, so it felt so full circle getting that award.

What are some unique challenges you face as a South Asian event planner in the U.S., and how do you overcome them?

Throughout my career, I’ve encountered challenges related to my age, particularly in a field where clients might initially question my expertise simply because I’m young. It’s often easy for people to make assumptions before seeing the quality of my work, so I made a conscious decision to focus on letting my results speak for themselves. Over the years, that approach has paid off.

Today, I am not only an experienced luxury event planner, but I’ve also had the privilege of working with Fortune 500 companies, accepting an Oxford Law Certification program, obtaining a cosmetology license, and working with A-list celebrities, among many other achievements. To accomplish all of this at an age when most people are just beginning to build their careers is something I take immense pride in. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the different paths people take in life, I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve overcome and the milestones I’ve reached along the way.

Your events have a global reach. Can you share an example of how you’ve bridged cultural gaps through your planning and production work?

Bridging cultural gaps has always been deeply important to me. As a South Indian Muslim born and raised in the USA, I grew up navigating the complexities of my identity. I often encountered misconceptions—people assuming Indians couldn’t be Muslim or automatically identifying me as Pakistani when I mentioned my faith. These misunderstandings were disheartening, as they overlooked the richness and diversity of my heritage.

This experience inspired me to celebrate and highlight the vast cultural and religious diversity within South Asia. Many people don’t realize that India alone is home to hundreds of religions, cultures, and subcultures. Even within the same religion, traditions can vary widely. For instance, Indian Muslims call the turmeric ceremony a manja, while Pakistani Muslims call it a mayoon. Gujarati Hindus refer to it as a pithi, North Indian Hindus as a haldi, Bangladeshis as a holud, and Ismaili Muslims also as a pithi. While the names and details differ, the essence—a turmeric ceremony—remains a shared thread across the South Asian diaspora.

When I work with interracial or intercultural couples, I see my role as more than just a planner; I’m a bridge between cultures. I strive to show my clients and their families that while their traditions may have different names or nuances, there are beautiful similarities that unite us. It’s about honoring these differences while celebrating the common ground, creating events that feel inclusive, meaningful, and deeply connected.

What trends do you see emerging in South Asian weddings and events, and how is your firm adapting to this?

I’m a firm believer in avoiding anything cookie-cutter, which is why I prefer not to follow trends—or, if I do, I always add a unique twist to set my clients’ events apart. No matter the budget, my clients are investing significant amounts of money, and their events should feel anything but ordinary.

A few years ago, I introduced the trend of mirrored acrylic wedding aisles, and while it became popular, I’ve since moved on to more creative variations. For one client, I incorporated a colored mirror aisle to add a fresh element, and for another, I designed a rose petal-covered aisle for her to walk upon. It’s all about reimagining ideas to ensure every event is distinctive and unforgettable.

What’s next for Samaa Events by Samia, LLC? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations you’re particularly excited about?

This year, I’m focusing on positioning myself at the forefront of my industry, all while growing my business. In addition to my current ventures, I’m thrilled to announce a passion project on the horizon, one that I’m incredibly excited to share in the coming year. And, of course, I’m planning another concert—an opportunity to keep pushing boundaries and levelling up.
