Born in 1979 in the United States, in New York City, her real name is Geetali Norah Jones Shankar. Her father was the acclaimed sitar player, Ravi Shankar, while her mother is Sue Jones, who was a concert producer. Her parents never married; they separated in 1986. She lived with her mother in Grapevine, Texas after the separation of her mother and father. Norah attended Grapevine High School before a transfer to a performing arts and art high school in Dallas.
While she was still in high school, she played the saxophone and sang in the choir in school. She changed her name to Norah Jones when she was 16 years old; at the time, she had the consent of her parents.
With voice lessons and a place in the church choir, Norah became a member of the church who considers herself more spiritual than religious. While still in high school, she received awards: The 1996 and 1997 DownBeat Student Music Awards for Best Jazz Vocalist and Best Original Composition in 1996.
She attended the University of North Texas. While there, she majored in jazz piano. She also sang with the UNT Jazz Singers. A fortuitous meeting with Jesse Harris led to future collaboration. Leaving Texas for New York City in 1999, she founded a band with Harris.
In 2003, she formed The Little Willies, an alternative country band. Nora was on piano keyboards and sang. The five friends formed a band; it consisted, in addition to Norah Jones, of Lee Alexander (bass), Richard Julian (guitar/vocals), Dan Rieser (drums), and Jim Campilongo (guitar). They found that they shared a love of the country music of Hank Williams, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. The Little Willies released an album in 2006. Another followed in 2012, called For the Good Times, which paid homage to country classics.
Also in the year, 2003, she amassed GRAMMY awards with her album, Come Away With Me. However, at the time, she was just reuniting with her father, Ravi Shankar, after an estrangement of years. She worried that success would swallow her up, since the media fixated heavily on her dad and their relationship. Since that time, other solo albums have won critical acclaim.
