How Mutton Chop Consumption Evolved

Humans have been eating sheep meat for thousands of years, referred to as mutton and lamb when the animals are under a year old. Mesopotamia is believed to be the first place where sheep were domesticated, around 10 000 years back. Central Asia, Africa, and Europe quickly accepted the animal. Wool, skin, and milk from the ewes were all valuable commodities in pastoral communities, which relied heavily on sheep for their economic well-being. Native sheep species in the United States, on the other hand, were never domesticated. In the latter part of the 18th century, reared sheep were introduced to Australia from the Americas by Christopher Columbus.

Sheep and lambs have been sacrificed to God since centuries ago. As a sign of goodwill, lamb has been a popular dish ever since. People have included it into feasts, festivities, and other major events in their life, such as birth, initiation, and marriage. European nobility favoured mutton and veal over beef throughout the 17th and 15th centuries.

Despite regional differences, sheep meat is nevertheless widely consumed today. The Mediterranean region and the British Isles are the primary destinations for this delicacy in Europe. People in France are less likely to consume, particularly younger people. Asian demand has also steadily risen over the last several years.
