From Music Industry to Photography

The biography of Delphine Diallo should mention that she did graduate from the Académie Charpentier School of Visual Art in Paris in the last year of the last millennia. Thereafter she worked in the music industry for seven years in various capacities; as special-effects motion artist, video editor, and graphic designer. By the time she was 31, she was burned out with the overwhelming load of work. And she didn’t know what to do with the rest of her life!

Then she was mentored by the globally renowned photographer Peter Beard whom she met by chance in a charity dinner, and with whom she collaborated for the Pirelli calendar photo shoot in Botswana. The experience enriched her greatly, changed her perspective about photography.

In 2008, after resigning from her role as a Corporate Art Director, she flew over the Herring Pond to reach New York to work for herself and her creative force, and the great city didn’t disappoint her in achieving those aspirations. In New York, Delphine began to explore photography, illustration, collage, and 3-D printing with insight.

She made a splash of creative colors with her black and white photograph of a small boy titled ‘Stay Strong’, which she took in 2003, in a village in Senegal. Stay Strong clicked in her mind the urge to explore a fascinating journey as a photographer.

Much more recently, her ‘Yin / Yang’ series in 2019 endeavored to give a refreshing narrative around photography of black women. There was news on Delphine Diallo that she wanted to change the gaze through which most photographers depict black women.

Over the years, she has had several exhibitions around the world of her creative works and her photography had appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, Time, Vogue, Italia!, Smithsonian Magazine among others. ‘African Spirits’ is one of her recent exhibitions, which was showcased in 2019.

A vast majority of her subjects are black females and in her language of photography black women are attempted to be presented in the way they see themselves.  In her striking black-and-white portraits that often amalgamate mythology, anthropology, and race dynamics, the women are being presented in an empowering light.
