With Greta Gerwig’s movie Barbie releasing July 21, you’ve probably heard Barbiecore going around on social media. After all, Barbie (the doll) has inspired countless artists since it was first introduced in 1959. The current Barbiecore trend mainly draws inspiration from hot pink—the color that dominates promotions and trailers of the upcoming film.

Think pink cheeks, pink lips, and pink nails.  The interplay of colours, textures and artistry should come together effortlessly.

So, how can you get a Barbie makeup look? Read on to find out.

Setting the Base

“Start by applying a luminous foundation, delicately blurring imperfections. Enhance your features with a touch of rosy blush on the apples of your cheeks,” says Dr. Monica Kapoor, cosmetologist and Director of Flawless Cosmetic Clinic and ILACAD Institute.

Shimmery Eyes, Glossy Lips

For the eyes, Dr. Kapoor recommends using a palette of soft, shimmery pastels, with a sweep of liquid liner, paired with lush lashes and a coat of volumizing mascara for a hint of drama.

For the lips, opt for a petal-soft pink or vibrant coral hue.  Alternatively, bubble gum pink or pink lip gloss is also a good choice.

Fuchsia Nails and Hair Glitter

Barbiecore nails reflect the essence of Barbie’s world, with glossy finishes in sugary pinks or fuchsia. You can experiment with different nail art designs or opt for a simple solid colour.

“Hair can be styled in cascading waves or perfectly coiffed curls, embodying Barbie’s signature glamor.  Add a touch of shimmering spray or glitter for a sparkling look,” adds Dr. Kapoor.

Choosing Your Pink

Choose shades of pink that complement your skin tone.  “If you have fair or light skin, you can experiment with a wide range of pink shades. Soft pastels like baby pink, blush pink and light coral can give your complexion a subtle, delicate glow. Avoid overly bright or neon pinks, as they can overpower fair skin,” says Dr. Kapoor.

Closer to the South Asian skin tone, those with medium or olive skin can explore warmer shades of pink. Opt for rosy pinks, dusty rose, mauve, or medium-toned corals. These colors can provide a lovely contrast and enhance your natural warmth.

If you have a tan, you can rock both cool and warm pink tones. Vibrant pinks, hot pinks, fuchsia and magenta can add a pop of colour and complement your skin’s radiance. You can also experiment with deeper shades like berry or raspberry, according to Dr. Kapoor.

Deep skin tones can carry off rich, saturated pinks. Look for bold and jewel-toned pinks like hot pink, electric pink, or deep magenta.

While these are general guidelines, it is important to remember that personal preferences and individual undertones play a significant role in determining which shades of pink work best for you. Feel free to explore different hues.

Dos and Don’ts of Barbiecore Makeup

Prep your skin with a moisturizer and primer to create a smooth base before applying makeup.

Make sure you apply your lipstick evenly and use a matching lip liner for a clean finish.

Avoid going overboard with excessive glitter or shimmer that can make your makeup look too heavy or unnatural.

Very thick or unnatural-looking brows may clash with the overall aesthetic. So make sure your eyebrows are well finished.

Remember to balance your look. If you are going for bold pink eyes, consider keeping your lips and cheeks more subtle and vice versa.
