Our mental well-being has a significant effect on your day-to-day life and, therefore, your overall health. Self-care is a term you may have heard or even used, but are you doing all you can to take care of yourself? Self-care can include anything from a day at the spa to maintaining a healthy diet. Journaling

Having goals, staying organized, and reflecting on your progress can increase your joy and lessen your anxiety. Keeping a daily journal can consolidate all these in one place. It can also act as a planner to keep your schedule organized and on track. It is a place to write down your thoughts, feelings, and emotions, to be used as motivation to keep going. By monitoring your daily progress towards various goals, you feel accountable and therefore will be more determined to accomplish them. Writing down the good things that you did, or the kind words you heard that day, will keep you thinking positively.

Bath Salts

We all know how good a warm bath feels after a long day. The mental and physical benefits of bath salts can make it even better. The salt helps soothe muscles, detoxifying the body and hydrating the skin. Specifically, Epsom salt increases magnesium in your body, which creates serotonin, a chemical in the brain that promotes an elevated mood. Some salts contain scents, such as lavender, that are proven to calm the mind and body. Taking a bath may seem like an occasional luxury, but if you can spare just 15-20 minutes a day, the mental well-being that comes from it are worth it.

Gel or Sleep Masks

Sleep is vital for both physical and mental well-being. Lack of sleep can cause anxiety, damage your immune system, and make you less attentive during the day. If you are experiencing trouble sleeping, a mask before bed or during sleep can be the key to a restful night. A gel mask can be heated in the microwave to help you relax before bed, or frozen to relieve sinus pressure or headaches. A sleep mask worn throughout the night blocks out artificial light, promoting a deeper, more restful sleep. A good night’s sleep gives you the needed boost to launch a great day.

Coloring books have become a trend, not only for their nostalgia factor but also their mental wellness benefits. The focus and creativity coloring inspires can help your mind and body to relax, as well as reduce anxiety — in a way that is similar to meditation. Coloring books are an ideal diverter of attention. They help you forget the pressures of work and the stresses lying ahead. There are many levels of complexity and styles to choose from, so find something that appeals to you and let it distract you for as long as you need.

Essential oils have many uses and benefits, one of which is to improve mental health. Some may be applied directly to the skin, while others may drift your way from a diffuser. Different oils can relieve stress, fatigue, insomnia, or anxiety. Lavender, one of the most common scents used to promote mental well-being, has shown to calm the mind, lower stress, and improve sleep. Bergamot and Rose Otto help to slow your heart rate and increase serotonin, thus elevating your overall mood. Using the oils before sleep or during a calm moment at home can help to naturally alleviate the stresses of the day.
