In today’s fast-paced world, self-care often takes a backseat to work, family, and daily responsibilities. However, Ayurveda—the ancient Indian science of holistic living—offers simple yet powerful rituals that busy women can integrate into their routines to maintain balance, vitality, and well-being.

March is Women’s History Month. As women succeed in their careers, we also need to reiterate the importance of health and wellbeing as it impacts both their personal and professional lives.

Below are a handful of simple yet powerful Ayurvedic self-care rituals that even the busiest women can integrate into their daily or weekly routines. While each one is rooted in centuries-old wisdom, they can all be adapted to modern lifestyles with minimal time commitment.

Here are some easy Ayurvedic self-care practices that align with your busy schedule while helping restore balance to mind and body.

1. Start Your Day with a Mindful Morning Ritual

I always advise my clients to avoid checking their phone first thing in the morning. Why? Because it can disrupt your natural wake-up process, potentially causing stress, anxiety, and cognitive overload by exposing your brain to a flood of information before it’s fully awake, impacting your focus and productivity throughout the day.

Rather than reaching for your phone first thing, set the tone for your day with a few intentional Ayurvedic practices:

  • Oil Pulling – Swish a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 5-10 minutes to detoxify and promote oral health.
  • Tongue Scraping – Removes toxins (ama) and improves digestion.
  • Drink Warm Water – A gentle way to hydrate and stimulate digestion.

2. Abhyanga: A 5-Minute Self-Massage for Radiance

Ayurvedic self-massage (Abhyanga) with warm oil is deeply nourishing. Abhyanga nourishes the tissues, improves circulation, calms the nervous system, and imparts a sense of grounding and warmth. You can do abhyanga in the morning or in the evening. Several of my clients like to do abhyanga and shower before going to bed, and it’s changed the quality of their sleep.

  • Take just 5 minutes to massage warm oil (e.g., sesame for Vata, coconut for Pitta, and sunflower for Kapha) into your skin before or after a shower.
  • Focus on the scalp, joints, and feet to improve circulation and calm the nervous system.
  • Leave it on for 15-20 minutes letting it soak in while you brush your teeth or plan your day/reflect on your day and then take a shower.

3. Bring your Mind to Focus Mind with a Mini-Meditation or Mantra

  • Close your eyes and silently repeat a calming word or short mantra (e.g., “Om” or “So Hum” or an affirmation or focus on inhalation and exhalation through your nose) for 2–5 minutes.
  • Chanting and sound vibration give the mind a pause and help break the cycle of racing thoughts when you have a million things on your list and the mind chatter won’t stop.
  • Use your commute or lunchtime as a mini “reset” moment. Even two minutes of focused stillness can boost mental clarity.

4. Optimize Digestion with a Balanced Ayurvedic Lunch

According to Ayurveda, lunch should be your largest meal since digestion is strongest at midday. Agni (digestion) is strongest at this time when the sun is at its peak.

  • Favor warm, cooked meals over cold or raw foods and offer thanks or sit in silence a minute before you begin eating.
  • Include all six tastes (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, astringent) for a well-rounded meal.
  • Sip cumin-coriander-fennel (CCF) tea to aid digestion.

5. Sync with Your Cycle

  • Avoid intense workouts or Vinyasa Flow during the first few days on your cycle.
  • Give yourself the permission to slow down and rest. Breathing deeply can help stretch muscles that might be cramping, while also calming the nervous system.
  • Check in with your digestion and pay attention to your appetite. Eat what your mind and body need instead of caving into your cravings. Also, avoid processed, junk, and unnatural foods.

6. Take a Mini Afternoon Reset (Even 5 Minutes Helps!)

Mid-afternoon is when energy dips and cravings hit. In 2025, I stopped getting a mindless cup of afternoon chai or occasional cup of coffee. You know what I replaced it with? Mindful-recharge.

Instead of reaching for caffeine or sugar:

  • Step outside for 5 minutes of fresh air and deep breathing.
  • Try a short breathwork practice (like alternate nostril breathing).
  • In this season, enjoy a warm herbal tea (like tulsi or ginger) to restore energy naturally.

7. Unwind with an Evening Wind-Down Ritual

Ayurveda emphasizes an early, calming evening routine to prepare for restful sleep:

  • Dim the lights and disconnect from screens at least 45 minutes before bed.
  • Sip warm golden milk to promote deep sleep.
  • Apply a few drops of warm oil to the soles of your feet before bed for grounding.

Final Thoughts: Self-Care Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated!

The beauty of Ayurveda is that even the smallest daily rituals can create lasting balance. Start with one or two practices that resonate with you and gradually build from there.
