Three movies from South India will be screened at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles, and two South Asian Stars, Riz Ahmed for Sound of Metal and Dev Patel for The Personal History of David Copperfield, have been nominated for Best Performance and Best Actor in a Motion Picture in the main category.
Here are the South Indian movies featured: The first of the three films to be screened is Asuran (which means demon or monster in Tamil), a period film written and directed by Vetrimaaran and produced by Kalaipuli S. Thanu. Based on award winning Indian writer and novelist Poomani’s book, Vekkai (heat), the movie was a box office hit in 2019 and won four national awards in India for the portrayal of a Dalit man who takes revenge on the death of his family from caste-based violence. The film stars Dhanush, a popular and multi-talented actor, director, producer, screenplay writer and playback singer from Tamil cinema.
The second movie, Soorarai Pottru, another Tamil film, stars popular actor Suriya. The movie was released during the lockdown on a live streaming platform, and will also be featured at the Golden Globe Awards event. The movie, directed by Sudha Kongara, is based on the life of Captain Gopinath, a retired Indian Army Captain, author, a politician and entrepreneur who founded Air Deccan. The movie was a major hit with the audience and is a critics favorite.
Finally, the third movie, a Malayalam film, Jallikattu, also made an official entry into the Golden Globes and is India’s first nomination to the Oscars. The horror and science fiction movie is directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and is based on the short story by Indian writer S Hareesh called, Maoist. The movie stars Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad and Santhy Balachandran.
From the main stream, keep an eye out for Dev Patel, nominated for the ‘Best Performance By An Actor In A Motion Picture – Musical Or Comedy’ award for his role in ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’. This is Patel’s second Golden Globe nomination. In 2017 Patel was nominated for ‘Lion’.
Also receiving his second Golden Globe nomination in ‘Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ category for his breakout role in ‘Sound of Metal’ is British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed. Ahmed was nominated in 2017 for ‘The Night Of.’
