Tea aka chai is arguably one of the most popular beverages across the world and is often associated with comfort and nostalgia.  Often referred to as a hug in a cup, tea is often a reminder of the simplest pleasures of life.  While China is considered as the place of origin for tea, it is extensively grown in countries like India, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. It is interesting to note that the USA also has a burgeoning tea culture with iced teas, green as well as black tea being really popular.  With a steadily growing market that is valued to be over USD 5 billion by 2033, the tea market is being driven by an increase in the consumption of the beverage which in turn is being fuelled by specialty teas, tea cafes and niche tea shops. On World Tea Day celebrated on 21-May, here is a look at some popular tea trends.

Rise of Cold Brews

There is an increasingly large number of people preferring cold brew over traditional hot tea.  It is more versatile and proves to be an ‘any occasion’ drink.  Less bitter and easy on the palate, cold brews are fast becoming a favourite with tea aficionados.  Further, it is amenable to a variety of flavours including fruit and floral infusions which makes it very popular.  It also serves as a perfect base for mocktails, sparkling teas and spritz-style drinks.

Herbal Teas

Given the focus on wellness and work life balance, herbal teas are trending given their refreshing appeal and healthy flavours.  Synonymous with mindfulness and slow morning rituals, herbal teas infused with ingredients like peppermint, ginger, turmeric, lemon, tulsi, and ashwagandha are increasingly sought after.  Stress, hustle culture and fast paced lives have accelerated the need for having a calming infusion to jumpstart busy days or even to unwind after a long day of work.

Diversification of Matcha

There is no doubt that matcha as a beverage is a global phenomenon and hugely popular.  The drink is now being complemented by flavours like vanilla, coconut and even chocolate.  Flavoured matcha lattes are surely a trend and there is also the addition of wellness additives like collagen and protein.

Ethically Sourced Teas

Consumers are increasingly demanding information with regard to the source of the tea in terms of how and where it is grown, farmed and processed.  There is also an emphasis on fair wages, ethical farming practices including organic and regenerative practices. And customers are often willing to pay a premium for responsibly sourced tea and social equity.

Sustainable Packaging

Given the focus on being environmentally friendly, simple and sustainable packaging is taking centre stage.  From reducing plastic waste to using recyclable materials for packaging there is emphasis on eco friendly packaging. This includes biodegradable materials like plant-based materials, paper, bamboo, cornstarch, reusable metal tins and compostable tea bags.
