One year ago, on March 8, International Women’s Day, I took a giant leap of faith with the SEEMA launch, fulfilling a dream I’ve had since I was a young girl in India. SEEMA aspires to be the largest and most influential network to empower and connect women of Indus origin all over the world. Our ultimate goal is to catalyze a powerful community for positive change.
At the time, I knew many of us are accomplished change makers, but I had no data on how we describe ourselves as a community of South Asian women. Who are we and what is our collective vision? This population is significant, large and growing—but our communal impact is invisible to the world. People know the benefits of better medicine and finances, enjoy the delights of fashion and cuisine, and thrive because of technologies and art, but are unaware these succeed because of influential women of the Indus community.
So with the SEEMA launch, I pledged to change this by doing three things. First, I would showcase and celebrate the talents and value of South Asian women. Second, I would initiative a survey to understand what defines our community. Third, I would bring us together one year later to define that vision.
So, this coming Sunday, March 8, in New York City, I hope you will join us at the celebration of the SEEMA launch at the SEEMA Summit. The event is a first-of-its kind impactful gathering featuring top influential women of South Asian descent. We will honor International Women’s Day, and celebrate the first anniversary of SEEMA launch. We also will reveal the exclusive insights from the SEEMA survey of how cultural expectations impact the lives of our community, so that we as attendees can define a collective vision for The Future of South Asian Women.
Our rich agenda includes remarks and panel discussions of professional and personal experiences by more than 24 amazing women (and men), as well as networking for you all to meet.
