The Importance of Building a Supportive Business Community for Women

In January 2025, along with eight other women, I attended a business retreat in Playa del Carmen in Mexico. Long days of work, shopping, real-world problem discussions, getting savvier as a business owner, including long walks and laughter, and making intentional connections. The weather was perfect, and the tropical fruits as well as local food were fresh. But what was invaluable was the opportunity to start the professional chapter of 2025 with an intimate group of supportive, collaborative, generous, smart, fierce, knowledgeable, experienced, compassionate, and unapologetically successful women in business and creativity!!

Women entrepreneurship statistics show that women are a driving force in the economy and that the number of women-owned businesses is growing. Women own more than 12 million businesses and employ over 10.7 million workers.

That said, in today’s fast-paced and competitive business landscape, women entrepreneurs and professionals continue to face unique challenges. Historically, minority women have faced the biggest hardships and had to overcome the biggest hurdles when it comes to making their mark in the business world.

From access to funding and resources to overcoming gender biases and balancing multiple responsibilities, the journey to success can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. However, one powerful factor that can make all the difference is a strong and supportive business community.

As I boarded my flight back home, I knew something in me had changed forever. I did a nonstop brain dump in one of the journals on the 4.5-hour flight back from Tulum to JFK. I have always been serious about my career and company. But now I was thinking about leaving a legacy behind. How to grow, sustain, contribute, support others, and give back? That’s the power of inspiring company.

A few days with this group reiterated why I intentionally need to be a part of supportive business communities for women. They understand you, root for you, challenge you, say your name when you aren’t in a room, and keep it real.

1. Reiterating the importance of work-life balance

We all know that some weeks work takes precedence; other weeks, you rearrange the schedule and prioritize YOU. Such is the flow of life, especially in a woman business owner’s life as you juggle work, home, and self-care along with unpredictability. Balancing career aspirations with personal responsibilities is often a challenge. A supportive community can offer combined experiences, tips, and encouragement on achieving work-life harmony. At this retreat, people shared how they had created pockets of stillness, joy, and pause in their everyday life despite the many demands. We openly discussed how the culture of boasting about busyness can be counterproductive, leading to burnout and reduced effectiveness. We offered suggestions to combat meeting fatigue and promote better time management. Be it hiring part-time help to implement project and time management tools to work smarter, not harder … the intention was for fellow women entrepreneurs to find practical solutions and emotional support.

2. Encouraging Collaboration over Competition

A supportive community fosters an environment where women uplift each other instead of competing. By sharing knowledge, resources, and experiences, women can work together to navigate common obstacles and open new doors for one another. Recently, a prospective client reached out—she needed help for her baby. I immediately connected her with a friend who is also an Ayurvedic Doctor and works with children. My friend said, “You’d be great for this mom and baby. Why are you giving the case to me?” I truly believe there is enough work for all of us. The more of us show up to life with an abundance mindset, we heal more people, we get paid, and the world becomes better.

3. Providing Mentorship and Guidance

The organizer of the Business Retreat was a mentor to a few of the attendees. These successful women attributed so much of their growth to the organizer and other mentors who guided them through challenges. A strong network allows emerging entrepreneurs and professionals to learn from those who have already walked the path, helping them avoid common pitfalls and accelerate their progress.

4. Boosting Confidence and Visibility

Women in business often face imposter syndrome or struggle with self-promotion. I am part of several networking and business groups, and the term “Imposter Syndrome” comes up often. Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. According to the American Psychological Association, it disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments. A strong network provides encouragement, positive reinforcement, and a platform for women to showcase their achievements. Celebrating wins—big or small—helps build confidence and establishes role models for future generations.

5. Enhancing Access to Resources and Opportunities

Networking opens doors to funding opportunities, partnerships, and professional development. That said, I’m the first one to admit that I don’t like large networking events. I am an extrovert, but I take my time to build relationships, not indulge in transactional interactions. But being a part of these supportive communities has taught me that you are allowed to redefine “networking.” You make it work for you—do intimate meetings, virtual or in-person coffee chats, and build intentional relationships. Because a connected community can offer valuable introductions and advocacy. Share grants, loans, and investment opportunities for women-led businesses as well as offer educational resources like e-books, courses, and toolkits. It’s a known fact that many women struggle with securing investment or breaking into male-dominated industries.

6. Advancing Collective Change

When women come together, they create a powerful force for systemic change. Invite successful women entrepreneurs to share their experiences. A strong business community can advocate for policies that promote gender equality, such as equal pay, flexible work arrangements, and access to funding. By uniting voices, women can drive meaningful progress on a larger scale. By supporting each other, women can build businesses that generate income, create job opportunities, and contribute to financial stability for themselves and their families.

Building a strong, supportive business community for women is not just about individual success—it’s about creating an ecosystem where all women can thrive. When women support women, we all rise together.

“Women’s networks are a necessary part of life. A mixture of empathy and brainstorming can move mountains.”
