The Life and Art of Amrita Sher-Gil, the Indian Modernist Artist

The Indian art market is relatively young and has seen rapid growth in the last decade. However, with a population of over 1.2 billion people, there is still a lot of untapped potential for collectors, galleries and artists alike. One of the most influential artists to have emerged from India is Amrita Sher-Gil (1913-1941), whose work has been at the center of many discussions on the subject of Indian art.

In the early 20th century, Amrita Sher-Gil was a prominent artist in the Indian Modernist movement and one of the first women to paint in the European style. Her paintings are known for their use of bright colors and strong lines.

Her mother was a Hungarian-Jewish opera singer and her father was an Indian Sikh aristocrat who sparked and supported her curiosity for arts. She was born in 1913 in Budapest.

There are plenty of interesting things to know about the life of this woman. She grew up in Hungary and became fluent in Hungarian. She moved to India for a few years, then to Paris where she studied the art of other famous painters.

Amrita was born in Shimla and her father, an engineer, moved the family there when Amrita was eight years old they moved to Shimla, India during the time of the independence fights. During this time, India was fighting for its independence from British rule.

She had the chance to see many examples of early 20th century art while in Paris, including works by Paul Cézanne, Amedeo Modigliani and Paul Gaugin. For example, they were able to mix new elements into traditional styles of painting.

Her painting, “Young girls”, debuted at the Grand Salon of Paris and won the gold medal. The Grand Palais, which was erected for the exhibition universelle in 1900 and is one of the most distinctive buildings in Paris is where she debuted it.

The art of blending the old with the new is something that has always fascinated Amrita. She was fascinated how this creates an interesting juxtaposition and draws attention to the beauty of aged materials.

In her paintings, Amrita Sher-Gil depicted the beauty of East Indian women. These women were often dressed in traditional garb and posed in an effortless manner, looking as if they were “sitting for a moment” or “passing time.” The simplicity and directness of Sher-Gil’s work is what make it so compelling.

Amrita’s work is drawn from multiple aspects of the visual arts, ranging from classical, modern and contemporary art. She uses a range of materials, including watercolor and oil paint; graphite, pencil and ink; acrylic paint.

Amrita Sher-Gil is considered to be one of India’s most important early modernist painters. In December of 1976, India declared her a national treasure with regard to her ‘artistic and aesthetic value’.

In India, Amrita has been a topic of much discussion and debate. To some she is an icon; to others she is a demon due to her scandalous and immoral lifestyle. However, she was also the inspiration for many artists and writers who found her character irresistible in their work. She helped articulate the growing modernism in the Indian art world through her innovative use of form, color and composition. Her style was uncompromising, original and powerful. Her art continues to inspire many Indian artists to this day.
