Everyone appreciates the performing arts, but only a select few actually comprehend the level of competence and artistry that is required for any given show. It is only through the persistent efforts of individuals who have an eye for detail, an ear for music, and the knowledge of movement in space to direct performers to their best efforts that a tale can be sent through the senses, whether it be on the stage or on the screen. A director of a performance is a storyteller who is responsible for ensuring that the performance’s various moving pieces, including the performers, the music, the sets, and a great deal more, all work together in harmony.

Rarely will you find someone who is capable of doing this to the level of excellence over years, particularly when it comes to directing a certain kind of performance, such as a musical or a Bollywood show. Saroj Khan, a legendary choreographer who was born in India, had an excellent understanding of these facets. This biography of Saroj Khan demonstrates how her life, both in her personal and professional capacities, has been filled with fascinating stories that might each stand on their own as the basis for a feature film.

In the Beginning

Nirmala Kishanchand Sadhu Singh Nagpa was the name given to Saroj Khan when she was born on November 22, 1948 in Mumbai, the oldest of five children. She was known by her childhood alias, “Moti Bachi,” and she demonstrated an early passion for acting. At the age of two, she made her acting debut in the film “Tarana,” which followed her family’s relocation from the Pakistan region to India in the aftermath of the partition of India and Pakistan. She sang and performed, uncredited, as the character Shayama while she sat on the moon. At the age of fourteen, she became a mother for the first time, giving birth to future choreographer Raju Khan, who was actually born Hamid Khan. She later gave birth to a daughter named Hina Khan after marrying Sohanlal, a dance teacher who was 41 at the time of their union. She had a brief separation from her husband, but after he suffered a heart attack in 1965, they reunited. She eventually made the decision to leave Sohanlal for good and settled down in Madras. There, she tied the knot with Sardar Roshan Khan and became pregnant with his daughter, Sukaina Khan, who later went on to become a dance teacher.

Career

When compared to what is known about Saroj Khan’s professional life, the amount of information that is known about her personal life is limited. Up until 1975, she held the position of assistant in a number of different productions. In 1975, she began working on Gulzar’s “Mausam” as an independent choreographer. By 1986, she had established a name for herself as a result of her work on a number of projects, one of which was titled “Mr. India.” In the production “Khalnayak,” she gave the well-known song “Choli Ke Peeche” a faultless choreographic treatment.

Her competence was established during the 1990s thanks to the choreography she did for the songs “Dhak Dhak Karne Laga” from “Beta” and “Tamma Tamma Loge” from “Thanedaar.” As a result, her name became instantly well-known across the Bollywood industry. She even dabbled in scripting for a short time, penning the screenplays for seven films, including “Khiladi” and “Benaam and Khanjar.”

Saroj Khan became more of a household name in India by serving as a judge on several reality shows. The STAR One series ‘Nach Baliye ‘was one of the first shows, followed by Boogie Woogie, in which she was a judge alongside Naved Jaffrey, Javed Jaffrey, and Ravi Behl. In addition to several other reality dance shows, she also hosted her own show, Nachle Ve, with Saroj Khan on NDTV Imagine at the time of her death.

Khan’s productions garnered appreciation all around the world, particularly as Bollywood began expanding beyond the borders of India and onto the international arena. During this time, she was awarded a number of significant wins in the fields of film and performance art.

Controversies

Due to the nature of their work and the fact that they are required to be outspoken a number of times, celebrities almost never go through their careers without getting involved in at least one or two controversies. Saroj Khan attracted unfavorable attention when she suggested that the concept of the “casting couch” was not a bad one. The “casting couch” refers to the practice in which producers and directors provide major jobs to performers in exchange for sexual favors. Outrage erupted across social media platforms when she suggested that the entire procedure is not analogous to rape or sexual assault. Users pointed out that the definition of rape does not need to include forcible assault; rather, it only needs to include the suggestion that failure to comply will result in unwelcome outcomes.

In addition, Saroj Khan herself stoked the fires of controversy by making allegations that the Bollywood choreographer Ganesh Acharya had sexually harassed dancers. Saroj Khan faced accusations of attempting to smear the reputation of a competitor, Ganesh Acharya, and Acharya launched a lawsuit against Khan for defamation.

Her first appearance on screen was when she was just two years old, but she went on to star in a number of additional films while she was still young. Eventually, she studied dancing while she was Sohanlal’s apprentice. Because the relationship between the two culminated in their marriage when she was 13 and the birth of her first child when she was 14, some people have suggested that she may have been a victim of child sex abuse rather than harboring genuine love for him. However, throughout her entire life, she would maintain a steadfast opposition to this concept. At the time, Sohanlal was already the father of four children and married. Saroj Khan was unaware of either his first marriage or the children. She was a second wife during her second marriage as well, once again marrying a man who was already married and had children from a previous marriage. Her third marriage, which took place in 1994 to Jojo Khan, who was much younger than she was, garnered significant attention due to the fact that he was her assistant.

Interesting Facts

There are many fascinating aspects of Saroj Khan’s life and work that are rarely, if ever, taken into consideration by most people. Her professional career spanned forty years, and she was responsible for the choreography of over two thousand songs during that time. Her parents’ relocation to India resulted in the majority of the family’s wealth being lost, despite the fact that she was born into an affluent family. As a young child, Saroj Khan amused herself, as many children do, by dancing and singing, but her mother became concerned about her mental health when she noticed her daughter seemingly copying her shadow on the ground while dancing. A pediatrician assured Saroj’s mother that she was fine, and even encouraged her to sign her up for singing and dancing lessons.

The documentary “The Saroj Khan Story,” released in 2012, features interesting details about her life. In addition, she is the recipient of the most Filmfare Accolades for Best Choreographer, making her the holder of the record for most such awards.
