Valerie Kaur Causes Social Change Through Love

Like her Punjabi father, valerie kaur is a Sikh American and was born on Feb. 14, 1981. Growing up, Christians constantly tried to convert her. She became interested in religious studies and later earned her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.

After the 9/11 attacks, a white supremacist killed family friend Balbir Singh Sodhi because of his dastār (turban). Sodhi had immigrated to the U.S. to avoid religious persecution.

Valerie Kaur started traveling America with her camera to document hate crimes against people of color. She enrolled at Harvard Divinity School, where she earned her master’s degree, to make sense of all she was seeing. HDS gave her the inspiration and skills to become an activist; she learned how storytelling brings people of different ideologies together and fosters social change.

The Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles praised multiple award-winning documentary “Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath.”

Kaur attended and graduated from Yale Law School with a Juris Doctor degree and founded Yale Visual Law Project. This trains students to create advocacy-based films. The profession of valerie kaur is lawyer.
