Vyjayanthimala is a former Indian actress, parliamentarian, and dancer. While she no longer acts, many people regard her as the first female superstar in the Indian cinema field. She has performed in many notable films and is remembered for her impeccable talent and ability to bring out every character’s unique personality.

Early Life

She was born in Triplicane, British India, on 13th August 1933 in a Tamil-speaking family. Her mother, Vasundhara Devi, was a famous actress and often went to shoot sites away from home. This resulted in Vyjayanthimala being brought up mainly by her grandmother.

When she was four years old, she got to go to Vatican City and perform a classical dance for Pope Pius XII. Later, she went to Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School in Chennai. During those years, Manakkal Sivaraja taught her Carnatic music while Guru Vazhuvoor taught her Bharata Natyam, and at 13, she had her arangetram.


In 1949, when she was 15, M.V. Raman, a family friend, signed Vyjayanthimala up for a role in ‘Vazhakai,’ a Tamil film. She got the part, and the movie was released in 1949, becoming a great success.

The following year, she got a role in ‘Jeevitham,’ a Telugu film. Her debut in Hindi films was in 1951 after she appeared in ‘Bahar,’ a social guidance film. It was not until 1954, after appearing in ‘Nagin,’ a romantic movie, that Vyjayanthimala experienced breakthrough and fame.

In 19555, she played Chandramukhi in ‘Devdas.’ People all over India and other parts of the world praised the movie and her role in it. The role won her the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award, but she declined it, saying she could not accept an award for a supporting role, while her co-star, Suchitra Sen, put the same effort into her role.

She followed that role with other leading roles in the 1956 romance film ‘New Delhi,’ the 1957 drama film ‘Naya Daur,’ and the 1957 comedy film ‘Assha.’

In 1958, actress Vyjayanthimala got roles in ‘Madhumati’ and ‘Sadhna.’ They both earned her a Best Actress Filmfare Award nomination, and she won the award for ‘Sadhna.’

In 1961, she appeared in ‘Jumna,’ a crime drama film that won her the Best Actress Filmfare award. In 1964, she won the same award for her role in ‘Sangam,’ a romance film.

After that role, she re-invented her character and appeared in a swimsuit for a role in another movie. This resulted in mixed reviews from her fans and followers, resulting in the movie’s mediocre performance.

Vyjayanthimala redeemed herself with her role in ‘Amrapali,’ a historical drama in 1966. She appeared in other successful films like the 1966 swashbuckler film ‘Suraj,’ the 1967 heist film ‘Jewel thief,’ the 1967 art film ‘Hatey Bazarey,’ 1968 ‘Sunggursh,’ and 1969 ‘Prince.’

In 1968, she received Padma Shri from the Indian Government. In 1970, she appeared in her last role in ‘Ganwaar’ as the lead actress and retired from the film industry.

Since then, she became famous for dancing, especially her Bharata Natyam, an Indian classical dance. Vyjayanthimala later received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the most prestigious award for practicing artists.

After ending her acting career, Vyjayanthimala opened a dance academy, started shrimp farming, and got into politics. She became a Member of Parliament in the 1980s and later quit politics in 1999, citing principled differences.

Personal Life

Vyjayanthimala married Chamanlal Bali, a physician, in 1968 after rumors that she dated Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. She and her husband have one son, Suchindra Bali, an aspiring actor. Her husband, unfortunately, passed away in 1986.

She published an autobiography in 2007 called ‘Bonding’ where she dismissed claims of having a relationship with Raj Kapoor, her director and the leading man in the film ‘Sangam.’
