Shiv Nadar Biography

Shiv Nadar’s mother, Vamasundari Devi, gave birth to Nadar on 14th July 1945. At that time, Vamasundari and her husband lived in a small village in Tamil Nadu. They later took Nadar to different schools located in their home district. Nadar later went to the PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore, where he graduated with an Electricals and Electronics Engineering degree.

After school, Shiv Nadar joined the Walchand Group’s College of Engineering (COEP), where he worked for some time. He then moved to Cooper Engineering. Later, he secured a job at Delhi Cloth Mills, popularly known as DCM. There he worked in the digital product division. At that time, DCM was one of India’s largest and most famous companies.

Working in this company was so demanding since Nadar was required to work for 10 to 12 hours. Working for such a long time made him realize that this was not the kind of work he wanted to do for the rest of his life. So, together with some of his colleagues, Nadar decided to leave this company and start a private company known as MicroComp Limited.

Shiv Nadar Age and His Entrepreneurial Journey

Shiv Nadar, who is now 76 years old, started his entrepreneurial journey in MicroComp Limited, a company that manufactured tele-digital calculators. He began this venture together with Aj Chowdhry, Subhash Arora and Arjun Malhotra. Nadar was, however, the one who held most of this company’s shares.

In 1976, Nadar noticed that only a few companies in India manufactured computers. He then decided to start his own venture. The Uttar Pradesh government bought 26% of this company’s shares after it was impressed by Nadar’s vision. This government wanted Nadar to name the company Uttar Pradesh Computers Limited, but Nadar named it Hindustan Computers Limited, HCL. HCL technologies first focused on manufacturing indigenous computers. Later, it grew to a software company offering various services and software solutions.

HCL Technologies is now one of the top information technology companies in India. It has various innovation laboratories and delivery centers that offer services to aerospace, banking, automotive and insurance companies. HCL also offers services to hospitality, mining, manufacturing, logistics and transportation companies.

Nadar, the CEO HCL Technologies

Being an industrious entrepreneur, Nadar has worked as HCL Technologies’ CEO since its foundation. While working as the CEO of this company, he expanded his business. In 1979, he started offering IT services to the people living in Singapore. He continued with this trend until the company opened offices in more than 40 countries.

Nadar decided to give back to the community by starting a college named after his father. He also donated computers to secondary schools in India. On top of this, he served as the chairman of IIT-KGP’s board governors.
