The Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) has announced an exciting new project, Soul Harmony, in partnership with Grammy®-nominated artist Chandrika Tandon, who will serve as YPC’s Artist-in-Residence for the 2024-2025 season. Supported by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA) Support for Artists program, Soul Harmony will debut in Spring 2025, marking the culmination of a year-long creative collaboration.
YPC Founder and Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez emphasized the transformative nature of the project: “Soul Harmony will transcend cultures, combining the beauty of Indian music with the diverse voices of YPC. Chandrika’s artistry has allowed us to explore traditions from the Indian diaspora in a way that enriches our understanding of the world.”
Tandon, whose Triveni album is currently Grammy®-nominated, expressed her excitement about working with YPC. “Watching their brilliant ideas come to life is breathtaking,” said Tandon. “The children’s voices and the sea of lights during Song of Light at the holiday concert were beyond moving. I feel privileged to collaborate with YPC to co-create groundbreaking works that blend Eastern and Western traditions.”
Inspired by ancient Sanskrit texts and mystical traditions, Soul Harmony will merge Indian music with young voices and orchestration, fostering a message of harmony and compassion. Accompanied by a string quartet and world-class maestros, the performances will spotlight YPC’s young artists, reflecting the rich cultural diversity of New York City.With rehearsals starting in April 2025, Soul Harmony promises to further YPC’s legacy of commissioning over 300 works by esteemed composers, enriching the global choral canon.
