Mention the words ‘health’, ‘physical strength’ and mental wellbeing’ and it is not uncommon for one to immediately think of exercise routines like going for a walk, attending the gym, engaging in yoga, meditation, healthy eating and the like.  But did you know that the house you live in and its environment also plays a key role in keeping you healthy? Given that we spend a lot of time at home, it is crucial to keep your home ‘healthy’ too.  Well, if this sounds intriguing read on to find out more.

Clean Environment

It is of utmost importance to keep the ambience and the interiors of your home clean, dry and safe from pests and pollutants.  Checking for leakages, dampness and any kind of cracks on the exterior and interior walls must be done on a regular basis.  Taps and pipes need to be thoroughly examined and plugged on a regular basis.  Leakages lead to dampness resulting in the increased formation of moulds, bacteria and other germs that spread diseases.

Further, special attention needs to be paid to kitchens and they should be cleaned thoroughly after use.  Leftover food particles also result in the accumulation of termites and rodents that spread germs throughout the household.  Keep your entrance as well as the mud room sanitized as it is the source from where germs and dirt can enter into your house.  Ensure that these areas are maintained clean and tidy and are disinfected regularly.

Fresh Air and Ventilation

It is important to allow fresh air and sunlight to enter your home to keep it healthy and vibrant.  Make surethat you open the windows of your home now and then to facilitate air circulation.  Indoor air pollution is a big concern in modern homes due to the collection of dust.  Ensure that you clean your carpets, drapes, bedsheets, sofas and cushions regularly to prevent dust mites and moulds from getting accumulated.  Excess dust results in allergy, asthma and respiratory issues.

Make sure that the exhaust fan or chimney in your kitchen is working well to remove any smoke and fumes that emanate from cooking.  Further, service your chimney professionally on a regular basis to ensure that it works well and keeps the indoor air clean.

Eco Friendly Cleaning Agents

While it is essential to keep your house clean, one must be wary of the cleaning agents being used.  Cleaning agents with chemicals can be quite harmful as the chemical particles linger around on the surface and subsequently vaporize into the air.  This may cause irritations, allergies and even respiratory ailments.  Hence it is key to use natural, non-toxic, biodegradable products that are devoid of harmful chemicals.   Apart from cleaners, it is recommended to use natural soap, organic skin and hair care products and even natural laundry detergents.  With regard to wall paints it is always safe to use paints with no or very low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).  The latter release harmful chemicals into the interiors which may have a long-term impact on your health.

Healthy Cookware

It goes without saying that using non-toxic and natural cookware is imperative for the good health and well-being of all the occupants of your home.  Always opt for natural materials like terracotta, clay and cast iron.  Stainless steel and ceramic are also great choices and considered safe to use.  If using non-stick or Teflon coated cookware, ensure that you use it on low flame and that the surface remains unscratched.  If using plastic for storage choose HDPE, LDPE, and PP plastics as they are safe and non-toxic.

Clutter Free and Positive Vibes

Apart from taking precautions to keep your house clean and tidy, it is very important to keep your house free of clutter.  Get rid of items you do not need or use as this will help keep your home organized and in order.  Divide your house into zones and declutter one space at a time.  Items like clothes, toys etc can be donated while electronics and batteries can be recycled.   Reduced clutter results in less anxiety and stress and helps you put your space in order.  A neat looking home is always enriching and emanates positive vibes. Fresh flowers, scented candles and a pleasant room freshener are all sure to complement the ambience of your home and go a long way in keeping you healthy and happy.
